iO Films Propel “Astro Boy”

Digital Vision Ensures Heroic Color

October 23, 2009 (Burbank, CA) Breaking and reformulating the rules for color management, iO Film has successfully completed a wide range of services and deliveries for the October 23, 2009 Summit Entertainment release of Imagi Studios’ “Astro Boy,” the movie based on the beloved superhero from Japan. The look that “Astro Boy’s” producers desired necessitated a profound change to the current color management process. iO relied upon Digital Vision’s Film Master and their own in-house custom system to create a solution that delivered the project exactly as specified by the clients.

Based upon a globally recognized and well-loved superhero created in the 1950s, “Astro Boy,” the film was directed by David Bowers (“Flushed Away”) produced by Maryann Garger, and features performances from a who’s who cast (including Freddie Highmore, Kristen Bell, Nathan Lane, Charlize Theron and Nicolas Cage as “Dr. Tenma.” Beautifully executed, the animated feature has been in production for the past two years; during which time the color palette that resonated for the creative team became a bedrock for the look of the film. That look had been built in 16 bit Tiff, REC 709 color space; previously unavailable as a standard of the post production process. Even though other pieces of the post pipeline (monitors and digital cinema packaging specifically), operate in lower bit rates, the producers wanted to make certain that the look of the film was absolutely true to the 16 bit files, with that look maintained through every deliverable. Those deliverables included high definition, DI and digital cinema packaging (DCP). After substantial research, it became apparent that iO was the only facility that was ready to deliver the movie exactly as the producers desired. It was imperative that each deliverable matched the animation files, exactly.

Kevin Mulligan, CTO of iO Film noted that the Digital Vision Film Master was a mission-critical piece of the pipeline he developed. Since no other facility

was working in 16 bit, Mulligan and the product team from Digital Vision dug in and made sure that the project stayed in 16 bit throughout the color grading process. The custom LUTs and other color management tools were imported into the Film Master. Mulligan stated, “Without the power and the flexibility of the Nucoda platform, I know that this process would have been at risk. But, because of the system and the calibre of support, the process was completely manageable and ultimately completely successful. We could not fail at this, and Film Master made sure of our success.”

Erin Corbett, President of Imagi Studios U.S., said, “We were dedicated to maintaining the vision of the director and the entire artistic team and it was imperative that we attain the look that we were after. The process at iO and the workflow centered on the Film Master were flawless. As a result, we succeeded on every level in creating a great-looking movie.”

Bruno Munger, Product Manager at Digital Vision noted, “We have built our reputation on our ability to develop color management tools that keep our customers, and their customers, completely satisfied. “Astro Boy” helped us to push the boundaries out a little further, and explore the realm of 16 bit color in DI and DCP delivery. We now know exactly how that those building blocks are completely manageable within the Film Master, and look forward to seeing the movie in all its glorious color.”

About iO Film
iO Film is a very nimble high quality boutique facility. It welcomes innovative workflows and offers out of the box resolves. iO Film has a first class team of extraordinarily talented people with a genuine love of motion picture imagery. Fulfilling the requirements Imagi presented with “Astro Boy” was no easy task. Getting a linear 16bit animated source to ring true on 35mm release prints, without altering the linear or DCP color fidelity, was a fine accomplishment. iO Film is located at 1415 N. Cahuenga Boulevard, in the heart of Hollywood. Contact: Richard Jordan at 323-822-4444.

Cooke Optics and The Foundry Collaborate to Improve Post Process

Nuke to incorporate /i Technology support to aid accurate post work

Leicester, UK – 19 October 2009 – Cooke Optics Ltd., the premier manufacturer of precision lenses for the motion picture industry, today announced that it is working with The Foundry to incorporate /i Technology into Nuke, the powerful compositing application. /i ‘Intelligent’ Technology enables the recording of extremely accurate, frame-by-frame lens and camera data, saving visual effects artists hours of time in post production by eliminating the need to guess lens parameters and camera information.

The Foundry recently carried out a test shoot at Blenheim Palace using the new Sony F35 camera, which supports /i.

“We wanted to test how the /i data would help us to solve issues of lens distortion when shooting with a zoom lens,” said Ben Minall, Demo and Training Manager, The Foundry. “We shot lens distortion grids with different focal lengths, and the /i data gave us an accurate focal length. We then used a lens tool to un-distort the plate, then used the camera tracker within Nuke to reapply this to the footage. Having the /i data makes the tracking process much simpler, particularly since lens distortion changes with the zoom.”

Minall continues: “Having /i data is an excellent sanity check – you know exactly what you’ve got, from frame rates to focus to aperture. You don’t have to rely on on-set notes, the metadata provides a failsafe backup.”

The Foundry introduced the concept of metadata support into Nuke 5.2 because it realised that metadata was becoming a major asset to post production teams.
The forthcoming Nuke 6 release will have an in-built 3D camera tracker, to which the user can provide additional hints and constraints about the shoot to recreate the camera – for example, which lens was used. Incorporating Cooke’s /i Technology to capture lens metadata is a huge step forward in The Foundry’s aims to provide more accurate information for post work.

“The buzz about Cooke lenses is phenomenal, they have a great reputation so it’s a great fit for us to work with them,” said Richard Shackleton, Nuke Product Manager, The Foundry. “Cooke is one of the first manufacturers to really embrace metadata and understand its power. A lot of time is spent in the post process getting information from pictures in order to do a better job, but often that information might be very basic or even guesswork. Cooke /i lenses provide real and accurate data which is invaluable.”

Les Zellan, Chairman and Owner, Cooke Optics, said, “The use and support of metadata is becoming increasingly prevalent in post circles. As budgets and timeframes continue to shrink, providing post teams with metadata from /i enabled lenses saves time and money while allowing them to focus on their creativity.”

SpectSoft 3d Live Pro now available

(Oakdale, California – October 12, 2009) SpectSoft LLC., a leading provider of video solutions on the Linux platform, today announced a new version of the popular 3d Live solution.SpectSofts newest system, which debuts at an upcoming Southern California demo in November offers the ability to take in dual SDI streams, mix them and feed them out DVI/HDMI or Dual SDI. This offers users the ability to drive a variety of display solutions, both 3D and standard along with other SDI devices, all simultaneously. The 2 incoming SDI streams can be from any source and can be either discreet eyes (right and left eye) or a single SDI stream that can contain both eyes combined in a variety of configurations (side by side, over under, etc.).

“The biggest difference between our standard version of 3d Live and the new Pro version is the SDI in and out, along with an expanded tool-set for the professional needs”, comments Ramona Howard, President of SpectSoft. “We have worked with many of the well know 3D facilities and individuals to build in tools that made sense for both a post workflow as well as a production one, thus allowing them to bridge the gap. Many of these facilities are doing both the production and the post, therefore we wanted to give them one tool they could use everywhere”.

3d Live Pro adds in frame accurate SDI out, monitoring and adjustments, machine control and meta-data capture. The ability to adjust parallax, apply vertical adjustments, monitor RGB streams from each eye, and bring in any stream/s and spit out any stream/s in a variety of 3D and standard formats. 3d Live is being used for:

* Setting up cameras
* Monitoring image quality of live streams
* Monitoring stereo assurance of live streams
* QC of already created/captured material
* Creating in real-time stereo images from dual streams (discreet eyes)
* Creating in real-time discreet eyes from existing stereo image formats
* Creating in real-time stereo images from other stereo image formats
* Adjusting stereo images – Real-time frame accurate image adjustment (per frame)

“We just finished renting your 3d Live for the first time last month, with outstanding results. Our client used it for a low budget feature, their previous 3D experience hadn’t gone so well, so we were concerned. Their response was beyond our best hopes. They got more than twice the setups they had done previously. The producers felt they were seeing what they were getting better than ever, all because of 3d Live. Last week, we completed our own production, and we all confirmed what our rental client told us. 3d Live is a terrific product. Speeds up the work. Keeps people on set in the loop. You could not have delivered a better product.” comments Bernie Laramie, StereoScope Studios.

SpectSoft will be showing off 3d Live at an upcoming demo in Burbank. The demos are open to all who are interested. Details are:

November 10
12-5
727 N. Victory Blvd.
Burbank, CA 91502
